A source-checked Marvel Rivals Season 9 patch analysis covering the July 23 Thebes update, Blood Hunt changes, Team-Up VFX, and earlier hero balance.

The official Marvel Rivals Version 20260710 balance post is one of the densest patches the game has shipped: it touches roughly 40 heroes at once, mostly through a brand-new Regenerative Shield system and a global Ultimate energy nerf rather than the usual handful of targeted number changes. This page is our own synthesis of who actually came out ahead, who came out behind, and why — organized as analysis, not a copy of the patch text.

Latest verified patch: Version 20260723

The July 23 update is now the current patch baseline for Season 9. The official announcement was published on July 22 and says the patch went live on July 23, 2026 at 09:00 UTC, with no server downtime. It adds new play decisions and usability changes; it does not replace the earlier Season 9 hero-balance numbers below.

What changedWhat it means before you queue
Thebes mapLearn the two main monuments and the sand-and-oasis sightlines before treating an old map route as current.
Blood Hunt gear enhancement and refiningExisting gear can be enhanced, and specific stats can be rerolled. Recheck a build before spending materials on an old recommendation.
Dew of InsightBlood Hunt enemies can drop this item, which grants an instant burst of EX to a hero of your choice.
Nightmare floor 300The cap is now Floor 300. Clearing Floor 260 with a hero awards 100 Units once per hero, according to the official notes.
Team-Up VFX toggleYou can hide Team-Up visual effects on your own screen, globally or per hero. The effects remain visible to teammates and enemies, so this is a readability setting, not a stealth mechanic.
Twitch DropsThe Mid-Season Finals drop window is listed as July 29 to August 29, 2026, 17:00 UTC. Check the designated stream and watch-time requirements before expecting a reward.

The patch also extends the Blood Hunt Double XP event to October 5, 2026 at 09:00 UTC and Blood Hunt itself to October 9, 2026 at 09:00 UTC. Those dates are event boundaries from the official announcement, not a promise that every account or region will show the same store or reward state. The official source also lists a small set of UI and hero fixes, including Punisher turret ammo display and spectator UI anomalies.

Three safe checks after updating

  1. Open the Team-Up setting and turn the effect off only if the effects make your own screen hard to read; do not tell teammates that you disabled their visuals.
  2. In Blood Hunt, compare the current gear tooltip with the item you planned to enhance or reroll. The new system changes the decision surface, but the official note does not publish a universal “best” stat order.
  3. Treat Thebes routes, Blood Hunt reward timing, and Twitch Drops as current-version facts. Treat community tier lists and creator demonstrations as experience reports until they are checked against the live client.

Source boundary: the official Version 20260723 patch notes support the dates, named features, event extensions, VFX behavior, and listed fixes above. They do not provide a universal tier ranking, a complete Blood Hunt reroll priority list, or a guarantee that a Twitch reward will be granted without the required account and watch-time conditions.

Conclusion: The Four Things That Actually Matter

  1. Regenerative Shields replaced base health on roughly a dozen heroes. Angela, Captain America, Hulk, Rogue, Thor, Venom, Magik, Black Panther, Psylocke, Star-Lord, Black Cat, and Daredevil all had base health cut and a Regenerative Shield of similar size added. The shield starts recovering 5 seconds after the hero last took damage and fully restores over the next 5. Net effect: more resilient against a single burst hit, more fragile against constant chip damage.
  2. The Team-Up Anchor Bonus was removed for nearly every hero who had one. This is a system-wide change, not a nerf to any one hero specifically — it is the mechanical foundation of the season’s Team-Up overhaul (see our Team-Up abilities list for how the replacement system works).
  3. Ultimate energy generation was cut across every role. Vanguards and Duelists dropped from 70% to 55% damage-to-energy conversion. Strategists dropped from 75% to 60% healing-to-energy and 75% to 55% damage-to-energy. Every ultimate in the game arrives later than it did in Season 8.
  4. A handful of heroes got real, uncomplicated buffs with no offsetting cut: Devil Dinosaur, Doctor Strange, Groot, Hela, Hawkeye, Cloak & Dagger, and Invisible Woman all stand out as clean winners this patch.

Step by Step: How to Read This Patch for Your Own Pool

  1. Find your main in the tables below. Check whether their change is an unconditional buff, an unconditional nerf, or a Regenerative Shield trade before assuming a direction.
  2. If they got a shield trade, ask about your own playstyle. Do you usually find downtime to disengage between fights, or do you stay in constant chip range? The former benefits from a shield trade; the latter does not.
  3. Check if your Team-Up partner changed. If you relied on an anchor-bonus Team-Up in Season 8, that specific mechanic no longer exists in its old form — read the current base-and-enhanced structure before assuming your old combo still works the same way.
  4. Cross-reference role-specific verdicts. Our Season 9 best Duelists, best Strategists, and best Vanguards posts turn these raw numbers into tier calls.

Full reworks

HeroChange
Black WidowComplete rework: full-auto hipfire, a new six-shot piercing Ultimate, and a new airborne dive attack. Repositioned from a sightline-dependent pick to an aggressive flanking Duelist.

Regenerative Shield trades (health restructured, not simply cut)

HeroBase health changeShield added
Angela450 to 350+200
Captain America600 to 300+300
Hulk650 to 400+300
Rogue650 to 350+225
Thor600 to 300+300
Venom675 to 500+250
Magik250 to 150+125
Black Panther275 to 150+125
Psylocke250 to 150+100
Star-Lord250 to 150+100
Black Cat275 to 150+125
Daredevil300 to 150+150

Not every shield trade is a wash: Thor, Venom, and Hulk all paired their health restructure with real ability buffs, making them net winners despite the lower raw health number. Star-Lord is the clearest net loser in this group — his Stellar Shift’s always-on 25 bonus health was removed entirely, on top of the base health cut. Deadpool sits outside this shield-trade group entirely: his base health actually rose (450 to 500), alongside a partial damage revert and a new 25%/35% damage-reduction window, making him a straightforward buff rather than a health-for-shield trade.

Heroes outside our tracked snapshot worth knowing about

The official balance post also touched several heroes not covered in our core tier tables, including Rogue, Angela, Black Cat, Gambit, Daredevil, Human Torch, and Elsa Bloodstone. Rogue’s Defensive Stance damage reduction dropped from 60% to 55% and Southern Brawl’s max bonus damage fell from 90 to 75, alongside her health-to-shield restructure. Gambit’s Kinetic Cards healing rose from 28 to 30. Elsa Bloodstone’s Double-Barrel Blaster ammo capacity rose from 8 to 12. We are not yet tracking these heroes in our full tier tables, so treat this as a pointer to verify their current numbers in-client rather than a placement call.

FAQ

Where does this data come from?

Every specific number on this page is sourced from the official marvelrivals.com Version 20260710 balance post. Any community win-rate or hotfix reference is separately labeled as community-tracked, not an official statistic.

Is there a hotfix after this balance post?

Yes. The current sequence is the July 23 Version 20260723 update, the July 16 content update, the July 11 balance hotfix, and the July 10 Season 9 launch balance post. The July 11, 2026 hotfix (marvelrivals.com Version 20260711 balance post, published one day after Season 9 launched) made eight changes:

  • Nerfed: Mantis (Healing Flower cut from (15+3% max health)/s to (12+3% max health)/s, with the Star-Lord Team-Up healing reduced proportionally), the Ultron–Peni Parker Team-Up (ally drone healing 35/s to 15/s, cooldown 15s to 20s), and Psylocke (base damage cut back from 13 to 12, falloff range pulled in from 15m to 8m, both Team-Up bonuses trimmed — she had only been buffed the day before).
  • Buffed: Black Widow (Red Room Rifle 40 to 45 damage with eased falloff, Electro-plasma Blast 40-60 to 50-70), Cyclops (Optic Blast 21 to 22, Ricochet Force 70 to 75, Gambit Team-Up cooldown 18s to 15s), Phoenix (Cosmic Flames 55 to 60, Rogue Team-Up damage 40 to 45 with its cooldown cut to 10s), Gambit (self-healing 20/s to 30/s, Bridge Boost 50 to 65 per bounce), and Invisible Woman (Orb Projection healing 40 to 45, Guardian Shield 15/s to 20/s, ultimate healing 180/s to 200/s at a lower energy cost).
  • Global: Strategist healing-to-energy conversion efficiency was raised from 60% to 70%, partially offsetting the July 10 Ultimate energy nerf for the role.

See the full breakdown, hero by hero, in our Season 9 July 11 hotfix explainer.

What is the single most impactful change in this patch?

The Regenerative Shield system, because it changes how roughly a dozen heroes behave in a fight rather than just how hard they hit. A flat damage buff is easy to evaluate; a health-to-shield restructure requires understanding your own team’s fight pacing to judge correctly.

Where can I see how this affects tier placement?

See the Season 9 tier list for the full cross-role table, or the role-specific breakdowns: best Duelists, best Strategists and healers, and best Vanguards.
